A Variety of Hockey Goal Keeping Equipments

In the game of hockey, there are various team members and a goal keeper. His main task is to deflect the ball and avoid goal from entering the goal post. His work requires lot of dedication and concentration. Besides these properties, the hockey goal keeper needs to stay very alert so as to he can help his team by deflecting goals. Since this game is very fast paced and the ball comes at a fast speed towards the goal post, the goal keeper needs lot of protective padding. He also has to lunge sideways and back ways to avoid the ball and sometimes he falls hard on the ground. Thus a goalkeeper needs lot of protective gear to safeguard him.

Goalkeepers may block or deflect the ball from the goal with any part of their bodies, but additional protective padding helps them a lot. This protective padding protects their feet, legs, arms, etc. They have to carry hockey sticks with them always. To play outside their defensive circle that is popularly known as "D" or "scoring area", the goalkeepers are permitted but they are not allowed to use their knickers but only their hockey-stick. Even their leg-guards; gloves, hand protectors or any part of the body are also not allowed to be used. From passing their side's defensive 23 m line during play, fully protected goalkeepers are prohibited, unless they are taking a penalty stroke.

Even if the goal keepers do not have chance to replace the helmet when play returns to their defensive circle, a goalkeeper who is wearing only a helmet and different colored shirt may remove the helmet and play anywhere on the field and retains goalkeeping privileges. To defend penalty corners and penalty strokes, they must however wear a helmet.

Goalkeepers must wear at least a helmet and a different colored shirt in order to have "goalkeeper privileges". In order to protect their body with hard hitting ball, they have to wear additional padding such as leg guards, "kickers" over the shoes, body and arm protectors, padded shorts, etc. Wearing all this gear, the goalkeeper is termed as "fully protected goalkeepers".

As hockey teamwear, the hockey players wear jerseys, practice jersey, hockey socks, Kevlar socks, stadium pro team hockey sock, jackets, team track suits, coach performance jacket, overtime gripper, recovery plus shorts or pants to look the members of a particular team.

Regarding goalkeepers, the 2007 rulebook has seen major changes. A helmet, leg guards and kickers must be worn by a fully equipped goalkeeper. Usually they need to wear chest guards, groin protectors, padded shorts, heavily padded hand protectors, neck guards, arm guards they wear extensive additional protective equipment, and they have to carry a stick like other players.
