Golf Shoes - Must Have Equipment or Merely Looking Good?
It's a fact that most sports have their own specialized clothing and equipment, and for no sport is that more true than golf. Not only is there a whole host of gear required including a set of clubs, to balls and tees and markers; there is a seemingly endless list of accessories to choose from.
Golf clothing also has its own conventions and if you want to play at any of the more posh golf and country clubs, it's important to be aware of standard protocol.
So where do golf shoes fit in? Are they considered to be part of your equipment or are they more to be included as part of golf apparel? An argument can be made for both sides.
One of the first considerations in choosing a good pair of golf shoes is safety. How do golf shoes contribute to safety on a golf course you might ask?
The number one contribution from a good golf shoe is traction. The small cleats on the bottom of the shoe will dig into the ground and help hold you in place. When you wind up for that long bomb tee shot, you certainly don't want your feet to go sliding out from under you. In fact you wouldn't want your feet to slide around at all or you risk slicing or hooking the ball.
A second advantage is that a quality golf shoe will generally be waterproof, or as a minimum, made out of waterproof materials. This is a definite must on a fair number of courses which might include numerous ponds as well as sand traps. Then there is always Mother Nature to consider. Unless you are a sunny weather golfer only, there will be times when the course will still be soggy from rain and perhaps times when you will have to break out the umbrella as well. Keeping your feet nice and dry will be a bonus.
A third thing to consider is comfort. A shoe with extra support and cushioning is important to keep your feet comfortable, as a golf course represents a fair amount of walking. Nothing will be so offsetting to your game as to have your feet hurt.
To make a case that golf shoes fit into the golf apparel category however, consider again how golf has its own set of 'rules and regulations' that apply. You must wear a collared shirt, you must not wear jeans, your shorts must be a certain length in the leg. Golf could be thought of as somewhat stuffy for the number of rules and standards it has. Proper golf apparel would then naturally include a proper pair of golf shoes. Nothing less could be considered!
If you're serious about the game, a good pair of golf shoes is a must. Whether your focus is on the stability and traction that the shoes provide or on the more social aspect that you have on what is considered suitable attire, your comfort and confidence is paramount. Either way, quality golf shoes will add to your performance and enjoyment of the game.
