Hockey Mouthguards And Why They Are Important

Hockey Mouthguards and Why They Are Important

Hockey can be a very exciting sport to watch and to play and it also has a very large number of injuries. The reason for so many injuries has to do no doubt with steel blades on ice skates, hard rubber pucks flying, and hockey sticks swung with incredible force. Hockey mouthguards can help protect from some of the worst of these mouth injuries and possible tooth loss.

Hockey does not always require the use of hockey mouthguards although the practice is becoming increasingly more common particularly where children are involved in playing. Children may suffer tooth or jaw injuries in a number of ways. However, it is preventable by using a device such as a hockey mouthguard and even schools and leagues are beginning to require their use.

Even when it comes to protective devices such as a hockey mouthguard there are multiple choices in prices and types. The device that provides the most protection is the dentist-fitted custom hockey mouthguard. Because the traumas experienced in hockey are usually where the face and or jaw connects with hard object the best protection available is required.

Junior hockey players may be fitted with a thinner hockey mouthguard to accommodate their smaller size but which provides as much protection as possible. For professionals a thicker material might be chosen to help stabilize the jaw more.

These selections are normally made at the time of the first consultation with the dentist. They can recommend a thickness that will fit the mouth of the athlete being fitted. While it is possible to purchase stock hockey mouthguards it is usually not the wisest as they do not fit as closely nor adhere as well to the jaw and gums and hence will provide less protection from some types of traumas.

Junior hockey mouthguards may be required by sports teams with younger players. Wearing a hockey mouthguard can protect the sometimes-overenthusiastic young athletes. Jaw and lip injuries as well tooth loss can be avoided by an athlete or the severity of the injury reduced by wearing a properly fitted device. While some injuries while playing sports are unavoidable and to be expected there are some that can be prevented by protective devices such as hockey mouthguards.

Children with orthodontics may possibly be able to wear a hockey mouthguard but it is always best to check with the dentist first. They will be able to advise if wearing this device is appropriate for a child with braces or other devices. That is a matter decided on a case-by-case basis. However, if the child has expensive orthodontic work it is always best to protect the investment in his/her future whenever possible.

Athletes almost always choose dentist fitted custom hockey mouthguards in order to achieve the most stabilization and the most precise fit possible. Speaking and swallowing should be no problem with well-fitted high tech mouthpieces. There is some discussion as to whether a hockey mouthpiece can reduce head trauma by absorbing some of the shock that might be transmitted by a blow to the face.
