How Could Baseball Win New Fans

How Could Baseball Win New Fans

Baseball is our country's (United States') national past time. In the last few years, attendance has declined. Fewer people are going to the ballpark and watching the games. Baseball can still win new fans.

When Was Baseball At its Peak?

In the 1930's and 1940's, Baseball was the only major sport. Baseball is known as the national past time. The New York Yankees ruled over the World Series and the game played on, even during World War II.

Radio brought the game to life for numerous people across the country. The announcers vividly described the game and added some facts and statistics. Many fans were following their team on the radio.

A day at the ball park was affordable. Sunday double headers had two games for the price of one. Between the two leagues, only 16 teams were in operation.

What Changed In the 1960's?

With the Dodgers and Giants moving from New York to California, the National League expanded for the first time in sixty years. The Houston Astros and the New York Mets instituting play in 1962.

Football began to emerge on television. Many fans started to watch Sunday Football, rather than go to a double header.

What Has Changed With Our Youth?

Basketball, Football and Soccer have been the sports that the children are now playing. Very few kids want to be baseball players. This left baseball with the less potential sport for children to play.

What Has Transpired To Attendance?

Attendance at baseball games has started to decline. This could be due to the recession. When fans lose their job, they find that going to a baseball game is not a high priority.

Other reasons could include:

1. Old people's sport. Older adults make up the essence of the fans at the ball park. It's difficult to get the kids to go to a game.

2. If a company buys season tickets, it's very hard to give away the tickets. Many tickets are never used.

How Is Baseball Different?

Baseball is a different sport in a number of ways. This consists of:

1. The game is not timed. In baseball, time does not come to an end; only three outs can end an inning. A game could be as short as ninety minutes or as long as four hours.

2. Weather (rain) can delay or postpone the game. Virtually all sports are played indoors. Football is played in all types of weather.

3. The game is slower. Baseball is the grandson of Cricket.

4. Baseball is played almost every day for six months. Hockey and Basketball play half the number of games (about 80) in a season. Football but plays one-tenth the number of games (16) in a season.

5. You can play a lot of games at the end of the season, that doesn't do anything to change the standings. September is the month that a number of teams try new players and look to next year.

What Other Revenue Is Available?

Television has emerged as a major source of revenue. The games can be seen on several channels including FOX, ESPN and the MLB Network. Local stations broadcast the away games.

Today, other fans are catching baseball on television. The fans like the convenience of watching the game at home.

What Else Might The Baseball Teams Do?

Since the recession could be causing a drop in attendance, you could offer an economical seats package. Fans could purchase $1 seats with a food package. Even fans with little money can enjoy the game.

Have the local advertisers employ selected baseball players in their advertisements. The fans and the community will be acquainted with the player, when they view him play.

Baseball has been practicing this for a long time. We still need to bring more people into the game. These special days can include mother-daughter, father-son, and doggy days.

Baseball Will Recover!

As the recession comes to an end, baseball attendance will grow. Baseball is still a big sport in a lot of areas and will continue to be the nation's past time.
