Watching Live Football The Great British Pass Time
Watching live football is as English as fish and chips, there is probably not a man alive in the UK that has not watched at least one football match whether it be on the television or actually at the stadium, regardless it is a British institution, the beautiful game as we call it is a multi billion pound industry in the UK and since it's creation as a professional sport has continued to go from strength to strength, the question is why are we Brits so obsessed with football? Well there are a few reasons and we're going to break them down.
Local rivalries, since the United Kingdom was unified there has always been competition between areas that the countries population has been scattered into. In many cases the rivalries are ridiculous because the people you resent live only a few miles away, whether the resentment is economic or simply due to old territorial issues the resentment is built so deeply into our culture that it has transferred into minor banter and local rivalries. Intriguingly the ancient culture of one village meeting in a field to fight with another had actually been passed on through the football violence experienced throughout the 20th century and although it is more of a minor concern it does continue in some levels today.
Adrenaline, can you name any other time or place (besides a funeral) where it is acceptable for a grown man to cry? Football gives men the opportunity to express emotions that may otherwise be socially inacceptable.
Comradery, any man who has been to watch a live football game will know that there is nothing quite like forty thousand men all screaming "the referees a w*nker" at the top of their lungs. Cheering with your fellow man is almost a religious experience it is a chance for you to feel part of something and most people feel so much a part of the team that they support that they will refer to their teams performance as if they were actually playing, example "we" had a great game.
Socialising, whether it be down the pub or in the office it's always a good laugh to have a chat about the game and watching live football is the only way that you can really be part of that conversation, there's nothing worse than missing a big game and nodding along while all your mates chat about it.
